Originating in the Indian states of Gujarat and Sindh, the traditional dance known as "Dandiya Raas" honors the Goddess Amba during the annual festival of nine nights called "Navaratri." Using sticks that are often brightly colored or embellished with bells and tassels, the dance involves choreographed moves while hitting the sticks together to maintain a steady beat. Raas is the most recognizable aspect of one of India's largest festivals, as individuals adorned with vibrant costumes dance to the energetic music with an unmistakable, characteristic rhythm. Today, Raas has become more than just a religious dance and has evolved into a form of creative expression and a symbol of the performing arts. Raas competitions nationwide have grown to judge creativity, costume design, facial expressions, enthusiasm, and much more among their entries.
On March 3, 2012, the University of Miami Indian Students Association will host its 5th annual Miami Mayhem Intercollegiate Garba/Raas competition. Mayhem showcases 8 premiere collegiate Raas teams from across the nation battling for over $3,000 in cash prizes.
The Miami Mayhem Executive Board has worked hard throughout the years to educate the South Florida community about the exotic and colorful Indian culture. By catering to the University of Miami students, faculty, and South Florida community, we have successfully been able to promote South Asian awareness and provide an engaging cultural experience that anyone can enjoy.
What is Sunil's Home?

Miami Mayhem's official charity and the recipient of all proceeds is Sunil's Home. Sunil's Home was established in 2006 to address the critical, increasing needs of orphans in India. Believing that every child deserves a loving home, adequate living conditions, qualitymedical care, education, and opportunities to realize his/her fullest potential, the staff at Sunil's Home commit their time, talents, and resources to help transform the lives of Indian orphans and future generations.
Sunil's Home Orphanage has very quickly become a name-recognized organization in the South Florida community. After 2 years of fundraising, Sunil's Home Orphanage was proud to unveil the opening of its 3500 sq. ft. Educational and Housing facility in July of 2008. The only facility of its kind in the area, Sunil's Home has become a refuge for not only the orphaned children it houses, but for all the hungry and malnourished children in the village simply looking for a meal to eat. In addition, its annual event "A Night in Bollywood" is one of Miami's most recognized charity events, featured on over fifty local news segments and raising an incredible $150,000 this past year.
